A long-lost copy of Superman #1 from 1939 has officially shattered records, selling for an unbelievable $9.12 million at auction. The issue was discovered last year by three brothers clearing out their late mother’s Northern California home. Hidden beneath old newspapers in a cardboard box, the comic somehow survived eight decades in extraordinary condition — so extraordinary that Heritage Auctions called it the highest-graded copy ever found.

The brothers grew up hearing their mother mention “valuable comics,” but they never imagined anything like this. Inside that same attic box were early issues of Action Comics, including the series that introduced Superman to the world. But the true crown jewel was Superman #1 — the Man of Steel’s first standalone comic and a defining moment in pop culture history.

Their mother and her brother bought the comics during the Great Depression and World War II, intending to pass them down as a legacy. “This wasn’t just about a collectible,” the youngest brother said. “It’s a testament to memory, family, and the unexpected ways the past finds its way back to us.”

Heritage Auctions called the find “movie-worthy,” noting the comic came from DC’s original print run. With this sale, Superman leaps once again into history, breaking the record previously held by a $6M copy of Action Comics No. 1.

From a hidden attic to a $9.12M headline — Superman is still saving the day. ‍♂️✨
