The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), headed by Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, recently strengthened its commitment to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Oman through high-level engagements in Muscat involving Philippine and Omani officials. The visit focused on reinforcing bilateral labor cooperation, improving worker protection mechanisms, and expanding government support services for Filipinos employed across various sectors in the Sultanate. Joining the discussions were Philippine Ambassador Noralyn Jubaira Baja, officials from the Philippine Embassy in Muscat, and representatives from the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) and OWWA, alongside key counterparts from Oman’s Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meetings centered on enhancing fair recruitment practices, streamlining contract verification systems, and ensuring faster response and assistance for OFWs facing workplace concerns or distress situations. Both sides also discussed ways to further strengthen existing labor agreements and explore new frameworks that promote ethical hiring and better working conditions.
These initiatives are strongly aligned with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who has consistently emphasized the protection, welfare, and empowerment of OFWs as a top national priority. Under his administration, the government has intensified efforts to bring services closer to Filipino workers abroad, ensuring that assistance is accessible, efficient, and responsive. President Marcos Jr. has also pushed for stronger international labor partnerships, recognizing the vital role of diplomacy in safeguarding the rights of Filipinos overseas while opening more opportunities for sustainable and dignified employment. His administration continues to advocate for fair and ethical recruitment practices, as well as the modernization of systems that support migrant workers—from pre-departure to on-site assistance and reintegration programs.
A key highlight of the engagement was the shared commitment to expand and improve services at the Migrant Workers Office in Muscat, making assistance more accessible and responsive for the growing Filipino community in Oman. These continuous efforts reflect not only the strong partnership between the Philippines and Oman but also the broader vision of the Marcos administration to uplift the lives of OFWs, recognizing them as modern-day heroes whose contributions significantly drive the Philippine economy and global presence.
